The workshop titled “Organization and Transformation Timber Sector” will be held on December 2 and 3, 2022, under the auspices of the presidential task force, which was established on September 6, 2022. The WWF-Guianas and Conservation International Suriname will assist in organizing this two-day program.
The organization’s objective is to provide immediate guidance on the strategy for the Surinamese timber industry, including the gradual elimination of round wood and illegal harvesting and export. A few of the specific goals include gradually ending roundwood exports, preventing illicit logging and export, encouraging sustainable forest management, and increasing tax revenue. With the possibility of revenue from the sale of the “carbon credit,” these intentions will ensure that Suriname keeps its carbon-negative status.
The agenda is open-ended and will attempt to inform the invitees on the first day through a brief discussion on internationally pertinent subjects such specific opportunities for Suriname. Working groups will work on topical issues on the second day and report their findings to the other delegates. The Royal Ballroom of the hotel Torarica will serve as the venue for this two-day affair.
