As part of the celebration of 170 years of Chinese immigration, Minister Chen Xu of Overseas Affairs of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China is in Suriname. She visited President Chan Santokhi as a courtesy. The chief of state expressed his gratitude for the delegation from China taking part in the celebrations during the meeting on Friday. The incorporation of Chinese people into Suriname society reflects the well-established historical ties between Suriname and China.
The Chinese community contributes to a versatile Suriname, making the country one of the most diverse in the Western Hemisphere. President Santokhi indicated that in addition to personal contact, there are also very good ties at government level and that there is cooperation at various levels. In this context, senior delegations from both countries have already made several mutual working visits. In November, Minister Albert Ramdin of Foreign Affairs, International Business and International Cooperation will travel to China where various aspects related to the debt restructuring will be further discussed. This, with the intention of completing this point as quickly as possible.
The minister has conveyed warm greetings from Chinese President Xi Jinping. She expressed her special thanks to the Surinamese government for the welcome and the warm ties. She indicated that the relationship between the two countries is based on mutual respect. Suriname has already made a deep impression on the minister. She expressed China’s gratitude for the consistent relationship and support for the ‘One China Policy’.
According to the Chinese official, the relationship has been further fleshed out with the appointment of President Santokhi. Trust has been strengthened and the affinity between the two peoples has increased, reports the Suriname Communications Service. China sees Suriname as a strategic partner in the region. The integration of the Chinese community serves as a bridge and is encouraged by the Chinese government. Cooperation will be further deepened and strengthened at government level in the near future. Minister Xu heads a six-man delegation that is in Suriname, especially for the festivities surrounding 170 years of Chinese Immigration.
