The Suriname Police Force (KPS) received 25 pairs of protective equipment and shields from the United States of America (US) today at the request of the Surinamese government. The Police Academy was the scene of this. Robert Faucher, the US ambassador, believes that upholding the law is crucial. “When people ask for help, we respond as neighbors and friends.”
A further $20000 is authorized.
A collaboration with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has been established as part of this donation, and officers from that agency will go to Suriname later this month to train the Mobile Unit there. Under the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative, Suriname received $300,000 last year for law enforcement training. The ambassador announced today that the US has approved another US$200,000 for Suriname’s continued efforts in the areas of police professionalization, counter-narcotics and anti-corruption. “Our law enforcement and security partnership with Suriname remains strong, especially in terms of our people-to-people exchanges. We hope that this donation and our continued support to Suriname under the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative will help the police to do their job more effectively and keep the Surinamese public safer.”
Always challenges
Minister Kenneth Amoksi of Justice and Police indicated that many discussions have recently been held with various American organizations. “These are all subjects that, when implemented, will certainly help us to step up the maintenance of public order and to do it in a professional manner”. The minister indicated that there will always be challenges, but they are really doing their best to raise the human rights situation to a higher level.
