The potato will soon be hard to find. Rishma Kuldipsingh, the minister of economic affairs, makes this claim. The crop has failed elsewhere, which is the cause. “Prices will increase once more. When potato prices rise, we are already getting ready to start watching them. The price will increase if the goods are bought more dearly abroad and import expenses are included, according to the minister. A kilo of potatoes currently costs roughly SRD 50.
According to Kuldipsingh, she is in a difficult position. “When I talk to entrepreneurs about lowering the profit margin on certain products, they threaten to stop importing such a product. Then you are faced with a scarcity of such a product. What do you want; lower profit margin or scarcity.”
