Representatives of Staatsolie has made known during the Guyana Basins Summit (GBS) 2022, that Staatsolie plans to open an auction for the Demerara acreage in the deep-sea area in the fourth quarter of 2022. The Guyana Basins Summit (GBS) is currently being held at the Pegasus Suites in Guyana. The three-day Summit explores the developments and opportunities in the field of oil, gas and energy in Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana.
The Demerara acreage covers approximately 43,000 square kilometers (km2) with water depths between 500 and 3,000 meters. Staatsolie and only four wells have been drilled in the past three years: GVN-1, ANA-1A, ARA-1 and the Demerara A2-1.
Staatsolie plans to auction several other deepwater blocks this year, along with a planned auction of shallow water blocks in 2023. In that bidding round, some eight million hectares of shallow water blocks will be auctioned, a small part of Suriname’s offshore acreage that remains open.
It currently has over 60% of its offshore acreage unlicensed.
A recent oil discovery in Block 58 of Suriname puts the number of recoverable resources at more than five billion barrels of oil equivalent, but that number is only a small fraction of what is believed to be in the Suriname Basin.
Seismic data obtained by Staatsolie suggest that the Suriname basin contains approximately 30 billion barrels of oil equivalent.
