He contends that the role of science and technical innovation in resolving global issues, such as the financial, food, biodiversity, and climate crises, should not be disregarded. He emphasizes how food safety technology can increase food production and improve agriculture.
On Friday, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel welcomed the heads of the member states to the Palacio de las Convenciones, where the G77+China Summit was officially launched. Current Development Challenges: The Role of Science, Technology, and Innovation is the summit’s theme.
“We encourage international cooperation and partnerships and knowledge sharing to bridge the gap between developed and developing countries,” the President said. He is also in favor of expanding access to digital technologies to young people, women, indigenous and tribal peoples and individuals so as to leave no one behind, reports the Communications Service Suriname.
However, the head of state emphasizes that one should not ignore possible dangers from poor use of scientific achievements. “The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) cannot be stopped. We recognize the benefits that AI can bring, but we must also consider its threats to peace, security and global stability, due to its potential for misuse and unpredictability,” President Santokhi argued.
The G77+China summit is the ideal forum to discuss various relevant topics for developing countries. The main goal is to achieve a fairer international society, where the voice of developing countries should not be ignored. In addition, there is a need to thoroughly evaluate and reform existing international multilateral systems and institutions.
Suriname will advocate for a more effective approach to climate change and recovery of small and dependent economies after the Covid crisis. Suriname’s participation at the highest level sends an important signal about the value that our country attaches to cooperation and multilateral relations.
