The “Suriname Agricultural Technical Cooperation Center” project was officially launched in this Saramacca area on November 21, 2022. This project provides as a clear illustration for the continued growth of our agricultural industry, which will be extremely beneficial in the future.
It is no secret that there are numerous problems with food security and rising food prices around the world. Even though Suriname suffers difficulties, it can also thrive in areas with enough fertile soil, water, and favorable climatic conditions. The agriculture sector will become even more mechanized, allowing for increased productivity, modernization of processes, and cost savings. The government has chosen to explore for agricultural potential on higher lands, in particular at Tijgerkreek in the Saramacca district, due to these factors and the significant risk of flooding in the low-lying coastal districts.
In ten years, the value of agricultural products is to increase to $1 billion. Strong professional institutions from both home and outside are required for the achievement of this objective. We were able to launch this project with the support of the People’s Republic of China, who contributed a grant worth USD 10.5 million as well as their knowledge to help our farmers and the agricultural industry.
