The Canawaima Ferry, which operates the ferry service between Suriname and Guyana, is out of service until further notice. The service has been suspended due to machine problems.
From given information we learn that the last sailing was on Tuesday morning. District Commissioner (DC) Senrita Gobardhan of Nickerie confirms to the press that the boat cannot be deployed at the moment.
According to her, the mechanic will be working on repair work on an engine from Tuesday. “Tomorrow afternoon we will know whether the boat can return to service on Sunday,” said the DC.
More than 70,000 people depend on the ferry service every year, so it can’t be idle for long. The authorities of both countries are now in consultation with each other to find a solution.
It is not the first time that the ferry service has been stopped. In 2019 and 2020 this happened for a long time.
