The freedom of speech and assembly is one of the cornerstones of a democratic constitutional state. It serves as a means of expressing public opinion about societal changes and promotes social progress. Hence, the Party for Brotherhood and Unity in Politics (BEP) thinks it’s crucial for people to express their opinions through peaceful protests within the bounds of justice and the law, and it always respects this fundamental right.

The party has taken note of the unruly protests that took place on February 17 of last year, during which activists invaded and torched the House of Democracy. Moreover, companies have been plundered and third parties’ property harmed. Although the party recognizes the predicament the populace is in and has called for policy adjustments within the National Assembly’s capabilities and constraints, it wants to make it clear that the circumstance can never excuse this behavior.

The party exhorts all activists to revert to the road of peace and discussion and desist from any activities that do not fall within the parameters of peaceful demonstration. The party calls on the government to listen to the voice of the people in justice and truth, so that peace can return to our society. God be with us Suriname!
