Minister of Justice and Police (JusPol), told the Council of Ministers (RvM) before the commencement of the Council of Ministers (RvM) that Suriname will plead for the woman who was arrested in Sri Lanka and who may be executed. Amoksi, mentioned that he and his colleague from Foreign Affairs are gathering information from their colleagues in Sri Lanka. However, the minister points out that these countries just like Suriname, also have their own legislation which may weigh more heavily. Last week the 26-year-old woman was arrested while trying to smuggle drugs into the country. She may face the death penalty or life imprisonment.
According to Amoksi, the options for obtaining a different humanitarian sentence will be looked into. The minister said that they were made to understand that the woman has engaged a lawyer. So they are also going to look at possible solutions with this one. The minister further said that this should be a teaching moment for those who are guilty of these practices and should refrain from them.
