Foreign allies have vowed to assist democracy in Suriname, notably the European Union (EU), the Netherlands, France, the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Poland. Through their embassies, they held a meeting with President Chan Santokhi. Helena Konig, the Deputy Secretary-General of the European External Affairs Service, spoke on behalf of the EU.

The international partners expressed their appreciation for Suriname’s dedication to democracy, freedom, equality, and respect for human rights and the rule of law in a statement. They emphasized their support for Suriname’s democratic institutions, its democratically elected government, and its people while expressing their continued concern about the violent protests that occurred in Paramaribo on February 17.

The foreign partners are aware of Suriname’s economic challenges and the costs associated with rebalancing the country’s economy with the aid of organizations like the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), as well as through dialogue.

Since they want to see Suriname prosper and its people live in a nation where democracy is upheld and the rule of law is upheld, the international community will continue to support the democracy in Suriname.
